This past month I saw both a new film, Fair Game, based on the lives of Valerie Plame Wilson and Ambassador Joe Wilson, and Henrik Ibsen’s Rosmersholm written in 1886. Two pieces of work, separated by 125 years, express similar themes and upsetting points of view. Both couples, Valerie & Joe and Rosmer & Rebekka, are good people trying to make a difference in a morally bereft society. Both couples better the world by dealing in truth while trying to maintain a level of morality and integrity. Both become victims of their time. Or is it all time?

The two couples are defeated by conservative governments striving to win no matter what the cost. Liberals who want to be right at any cost. The media who want to be important at all cost. Morality and integrity become the victims of corruption and self-serving aggrandizement.

The Wilson’s life is totally uprooted because he was asked to investigate and reported the truth causing Valerie’s expulsion from her covert agent position. Minimized and demeaned they had to find a away to survive. Rosmer and Rebekka see no way out. Neither can exist with the corruption surrounding them.

A false war, a destroyed economy, lies, and deceit are the winners and what we are left to live with. The bad guys become celebrities. Where are we headed?

As I walk the streets of Manhattan’s Upper West Side on these clear, brisk, and bright days accompanied by my faithful and trusted four-legged companion, Gustave Flaubert (Gus) all the world seems at peace. At peace that is until a bicycler comes barreling down the sidewalk forcing us to move out of the way. Am I mistaken? Isn’t the sidewalk a pedestrian walkway? Doesn’t pedestrian derive from Greek or Latin meaning foot? Why then are we foot soldiers being bombarded by cyclists on our turf? It completely unsettles Gus who charges for the feet of the furiously pedaling cycler. Barking and growling at this wheeled machine knowing it should be off the sidewalk.

Across from our home is a senior citizen facility. They often walk with their aides and walkers being forced to surrender their to a speeding cycler. A 96 year old friend was hit a biker. He knocked her down saying “Hope I didn’t hurt you.” and kept right on going leaving her on the ground.

I am all for bicyclist having their own lanes and rights. My question is, are they unqualifiedly without traffic regulations? There is one bill stating any cyclist over 14 years old is not allowed on the sidewalk. It is an unenforced law. I have spoken with policemen and they tell me it’s only minor. True it is minor but it is an infraction of the law making our streets less than 100% safe for pedestrians.

Wouldn’t giving a few tickets to sidewalk-riding bikers bring in some much needed revenue? More importantly, if they a few were fined bicyclists would be in the street with other wheeled vehicles immediately. Many lawbreakers are delivery people. Once their establishment has to pay fines we will have our pedestrian sidewalks back and safe for both two and four legged traffic.

Let’s all band together and take back our sidewalks.
